The architectural project, commissioned by CDS HOLDING S.p.A. and ORION and led by architect Davide Padoa, CEO of the award-winning studio Design International, with the assistance of architect Stefano Cordeschi for the building permit, is part of a large urban redevelopment plan for the Valle Aurelia district in Rome. The aim is to reorganise services and enhance the former Fornace Veschi. The shopping centre, connected to the new Piazza della Fornace, is conceived as an element of urban integration and as a nerve centre of aggregation. Pedestrian paths connect it to the residential area, the metro station and the railway station, making it a crucial hub in the neighbourhood. Aura is a multifunctional centre that houses 60 shops, a hypermarket, a gym, a bookshop with spaces for recreational activities, restaurants and bars, all connected by pedestrian paths and green areas. The mall is spread over four levels, in addition to two underground garages with over 700 parking spaces. The design follows the slope of the land, allowing access to the center from all sides and creating dynamic urban perspectives on every front. The heart of the project is the semi-open, non-air-conditioned shopping gallery, which connects the three levels of shops and culminates in a private square for public use. This gallery serves as a link between the subway station, the residential area and the Piazza della Fornace. The abolition of the distinction between inside and outside is highlighted by the laminated wood and glass roof of the food court terrace, which favors the use of natural light. All the levels overlooking the gallery enjoy this lighting, transforming the sky into a scenographic element that animates a continuous play of internal reflections, amplified by the use of glass.
