The Ecuador Pavilion at Expo Milano 2015, designed by ZORROZUA y ASOCIADOS, stands out for its graphic façade inspired by the multicolored textiles of the Otavalo region of Ecuador. This design aimed to ensure a strong visual impact and convey the country’s rich cultural and environmental heritage. The unique façade is composed of anodized aluminum curtains, produced by Kriskadecor, that transform the textile patterns into multicolored chains. These chains reflect the color range and vibrant diversity of Ecuador, a country known for its biodiversity. The movement of the sun and wind amplifies the feeling of dynamism, reflecting the identity of a country in constant evolution, as emphasized by the pavilion’s claim, “ECUADOR DISCOVER OUR EVOLUTION”.
The pavilion building, measuring 1000 m² on three floors, was designed with fluid and open spaces. The ground floor, conceived as a reception area, presents the concept of “buen vivir” and shows the variety of agri-food production and biodiversity of Ecuador through activity areas, show-cooking zones and performances. The first floor is dedicated to an exhibition area that offers an audiovisual experience, allowing visitors to discover the agri-food biodiversity of the country.
The museography is divided into two thematic areas. The first covers four regions: Coast, Andes, Galápagos and Amazonas. In this section, large audiovisual projections, 3D holograms and a “scratch and sniff” system present the typical products and the main agri-food resources of these regions. A distinctive element is the “Ecuador line”, a luminous line that crosses the room, symbolizing the origin of the country’s biodiversity. This line is geographically positioned on a large graphic map of Ecuador, highlighting the main agri-food products.
The second area is an audiovisual space where visitors can learn about the main objective that Ecuador wants to communicate: its potential as a producer and processor of high-quality food, as a partner in the international market, and its commitment to sustainable and evolving agriculture. This pavilion was therefore not only an opportunity to explore Ecuador’s culture and biodiversity, but also to highlight the country’s role as a leader in innovative and sustainable agricultural practices.
