Load-bearing structures of the building, spiral staircase and external cladding support structure
AAAA Quatto Associati
A compact white volume represents the essentiality of a pre-existing boulder, whose fronts become supports for the communication of the message that links the Catholic Church to the central theme of EXPO 2015: “Not by bread alone”.
The sober and evocative architecture of the Holy See Pavilion welcomes visitors with the translation of the famous biblical expression into 13 languages and the writing becomes a poetic image, alluding to words that fall from above like manna from heaven.
Inside, two half-vaults take on the value of architectural fragments capable of evoking spaces connotative of Christianity: natural light collectors at the top, in the lower part they converge on the central axis, on the long wooden table around which the exhibition story revolves, the fulcrum and heart of the moment of welcome, a synthesis between individual and community experience.
The pavilion project involves the use of lightweight dry construction systems, to allow for rapid assembly phases.
The load-bearing structure in metal carpentry follows the shape of the external architectural envelope, whose infill is made with a continuous facade system and external cladding in Aquapanel sheets.
The external writings are in laser-cut steel sheet.
