Multi-storey structure, floor, corrugated sheet metal, structural reinforcement of existing building

Studio Amati s.r.l.

The Institute integrates elements of bio-architecture, following the principles of “Energy saving” of the Kyoto Protocol. The structure combines the use of steel, representing the historical memory of the city, with sustainable environmental technologies. It is built on a reinforced concrete (RC) and metal carpentry base, with an irregular arrangement of the load-bearing elements.
From the ground floor, two reinforced concrete blocks rise that support the entire building, structured like a bridge. The 16-meter perimeter and transverse lattice beams support a secondary framework of purlins, with floors in corrugated sheet metal type HI-Bond. The bracing, crucial for stability, is made with reinforced concrete partitions and lattice beams.
A sloping metal carpentry walkway connects the new building to the existing one, facilitating assembly on site by bolting. The greatest challenge was the recovery of the existing building, which proved inadequate to support the new expected loads and with poor fire resistance. A new steel load-bearing structure was therefore designed, respecting the original aesthetic proportions.
The project, developed according to the anti-seismic regulations of Ordinance no. 3274/2003 and Ministerial Decree 2005, has ensured that the building is safe and functional even in the event of an emergency, considering its strategic function for civil protection.
