Merlata Bloom fits into an architectural context in which sustainability has become a fundamental and concrete element, as demonstrated by the passing of the first phase of LEED certification by Uptown, a residential project commissioned by EuroMilano. In line with this trend, the CallisonRTKL project also presents itself as sustainable. Simona Portigliotti specifies why: “sustainability, environmental and social, inclusiveness and putting people at the center are the cornerstone of all our commitments. Which in this case materialized in a deep work aimed at breaking down architectural, cultural and social barriers. To do so, we started by interviewing the inhabitants of the adjacent UpTown area, those of the surrounding historic neighborhoods, and then the local associations and stakeholders, schools, meeting places, parishes, artisans... so as to understand what the expectations of the former are, the possibilities of interaction with the latter, and co-construct together the services of the Center, also involving the entrepreneurial realities already present or in future development, so as to create new jobs together.
From an environmental perspective, the highest standards of modern urban planning have been chosen, eco-sustainable materials, sources of natural lighting, from the roof to the ground floor and between the various levels of the building; advanced systems for the containment of electricity consumption and waste and dispersion; solutions with high thermal, luminous and acoustic comfort; in favor of a correct use of recycled materials, the disposal of waste produced, and efficient and renewable energy sources to reduce CO2 emissions".
A further confirmation, as stated by architect Corrado Rossetti, is the forecast of the release of the BREEAM "very good" certification which will also allow reaching, when Merlata Bloom is in the management phase, the BREEAM "excellent" level.
Another key aspect of the project, relevant in terms of utility and use by citizens, is its connection with the city of Milan and its neighborhoods. “Merlata Bloom Milano – states Simona Portigliotti – is already located within the Milanese municipality and is at the center of a vast infrastructure system – dedicated exits from both the A8 and A4 motorways - two MM1 metro stops currently within 800 meters, but above all the future new station of the “MIND” railway link - right at the end of the pedestrian area - which will connect Merlata Bloom to the main hubs of the Garibaldi, Repubblica and Porta Venezia stops within 15 minutes. Finally, the Raggio Verde N°7, one of the cycle paths planned and promoted by the Municipality of Milan, which will directly connect the mall with Via Gallaratese and therefore with Viale Certosa”. Specifically, the new MIND stop will be located in correspondence with the MIC walkway, where a ticket office will also be activated.
